  1. 1875-1955. German novelist and critic,
  2. concerned with the theme of the artist's
  3. relation to society. His first novel was
  4. Buddenbrooks 1901, which, followed by Der
  5. Zauberberg/The Magic Mountain 1924, led to a
  6. Nobel prize 1929. Later works include Dr
  7. Faustus 1947 and Die Bekenntnisse des
  8. Hochstaplers Felix Krull/Confessions of Felix
  9. Krull 1954. Notable among his works of short
  10. fiction is Der Tod in Venedig/Death in Venice
  11. 1913. Mann worked in an insurance office in
  12. Munich and on the staff of the periodical
  13. Simplicissimus. His opposition to the Nazi
  14. regime forced him to leave Germany and in
  15. 1940 he became a US citizen. Among his other
  16. works are the biblical tetralogy on the theme
  17. of Joseph and his brothers 1933-44, and a
  18. number of short stories, including `Tonio
  19. Kroger' 1903.
